Why We Celebrate Nag Panchami?
Nag Panchami is a festival of Nagas. Snakes are not perceived as harmful in Hindu religion. On the other hand, they are considered strong, sacred, and divine. Let’s understand why this day is celebrated:
1. Nature and Snakes
Snakes can assist the farmers because they feed on pests and rats. They maintain the earth in equilibrium. They believe snakes should be given rest and respect on this day.
2. Snakes and Gods
In Hindu stories, many gods are connected to snakes:
- Lord Shiva has a snake tied into his neck.
- Lord Vishnu descends into the large multi-headed serpent known as Sheshnag.
- Manasa Devi goddess is the goddess of serpent.
3. Symbol of Power
Snakes are potent. In Hindu religion, snakes symbolize fertility, defense and universal power. By interceding to them we welcome good health, peace and even good luck.

The Story of King Janamejaya
The great snake Takshak had bitten long ago king Parikshit who was the grandson of Arjuna (of Mahabharata). Tragically, the king died. His son, King Janamejaya, was extremely angry and desired revenge. He started a big puja called Sarpa Yagya, a fire ritual to burn all snakes.
Many snakes were pulled into the fire through mantras. Even the mighty Takshak tried to hide with Lord Indra, but the yagya was too powerful. The gods were scared. They went to Goddess Manasa, the mother of snakes. She sent her wise son Astika, a young brahmin boy, to stop the puja.
Astika reached the king and asked him to stop the Sarpa Yagya. The king agreed out of respect. This stopped the killing of snakes. That day was the fifth day of Shravan month, which we now celebrate as Nag Panchami, a day to save and worship snakes.
