Hindus believe that Yogini Ekadashi is a very significant festival. Every year, there are two days of Ekadashi called Shukla Paksha Ekadashi and Krishna Paksha Ekadashi. This festival happens on the 11th night of the waning moon in the month of Ashadha.

    What is Yogini Ekadashi

The sacred Vedic calendar shows that Ekadashi comes in each month, once in the bright fortnight when the moon rises and the next time in the dark fortnight when the moon declines.

This Ekadashi falls during the last phases of Krishna Paksha tithi and is celebrated in June or July. Yogini Ekadashi starts before Dev Shaymin and is celebrated after Nirjala Ekadashi, which falls in the month of Jyeshtha of Shukla Paksha tithi.

    Yogini Ekadashi Importance

The main focus of worship is Lord Narayan, also known as Shri Hari. This is a significant day for those who have faith in Yogini Ekadashi vrat or fast which bestows blessed prosperity and happiness in life. Because this is a one-time fast, those who keep fast will get the same good fortune because they will be feeding 88 thousand Brahmins. According to Padma Purana, all those who piously keep this Ekadashi ritual go through spiritual changes in life.

    Yogini Ekadashi Vrat Katha

There are 2 katha. Both are Yudhishthira, the elder son of Pandava and Hem Mali, Kubera's gardener, the lord of riches.

Yudhishthira, his cousin, had received instruction from Lord Krishna regarding the significance of Ekadashi Vrat. According to Lord Krishna, the earthly manifestation of Lord Vishnu, I will inform you of the Ekadashi, the highest of all fast days, which falls during the dark fortnight of the month of Ashadha.

Lord Shiva's worshipper, King Kuber, presented the lord with flowers. Hem Mali worked as a gardener. He will receive Kuber flowers from Mansarovar. But he did receive the flowers but failed to send them to Kuber because he was too engrossed in his beautiful wife. Due to this, the king sent his servant to find out the real reason for Hem's carelessness.

When Kuber came to know about this, he was angry and cursed Hem with the killer disease of leprosy and got him divorced by his wife. Hem had gone out of the palace and was suffering terribly due to the sickness.

The hem came to the ashram of Rishi Markandeya after wandering for a few years in the jungle, and upon hearing his story, he recommended him to keep Yogini Ekadashi Vrat.

Hem Mali witnessed the quick and prayed for pardon to Lord Vishnu. Due to the mercy of the Lord accepting his prayers, Hem was purged from all of his faults. He was no longer plagued and was reunited with his doting spouse.

Likewise, on Yogini Ekadashi, all the followers who fast on this day and pray to Lord Vishnu with clean minds and sentiments will be freed from all issues and sickness-related issues.
